Neuroarts: Why Getting Crafty is Getting Smart!

Jill Ross Nadler

Did you know that in addition to being Chief Storyologist at Page Turner Adventures, I'm also a producer at South Florida PBS? One of the most exciting projects I worked on this year was our Leonardo DaVinci Immersive Art Experience.

It's an hour-long light and sound show. Participants can talk to Mona Lisa and interact with the walls and floors. Then the audience enters DaVinci's Workshop where they get to create their own art, music, and inventions...and...to see how this creativity lights up their brains!

My station is committed to the power of neuroarts, a fancy name for the intersection of neuroscience and creative expression. Studies show that coloring, cutting, and creating actually change brain structure and function in amazing ways. Every scribble, sculpture, and song is helping shape young minds for future success! Cool, right?

Every time a child picks up a paintbrush or shapes clay, their brain forms new neural connections. These artistic adventures activate multiple brain regions simultaneously - from visual processing areas to motor control centers and emotional systems. It's like a full-brain workout in disguise!

Research shows creative activities:

• Improve problem-solving abilities

• Enhance focus and attention

 • Develop fine motor skills

 • Boost emotional regulation

 • Build confidence and resilience

Because I too embrace the idea of crafts crafting better brains (ahem!) I call my kids craft videos smARTS & CRAFTS. It 's also why I'm releasing a bunch of smARTS & CRAFTS Projects into the world for FREE this summer.as part of my HAPPILY EVER CRAFTER Program.
